Progress in Understanding Confinement

In recent years a research program was developed to investigate dual superconductivity of the vacuum as a mechanism of confinement of color in QCD. The original idea goes back to t’Hooft and Mandelstam, and is, modulo duality transformation, the same as confinement of magnetic charges in a type 2 superconductor. The end points of an Abrikosov flux tube can be viewed as monopoles; their energy i...

Understanding Confinement From Deconfinement

We use effective magnetic SU(N) pure gauge theory with cutoff M and fixed gauge coupling gm to calculate non-perturbative magnetic properties of the deconfined phase of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We obtain the response to an external closed loop of electric current by reinterpreting and regulating the calculation of the one loop effective potential in Yang-Mills theory. This effective potential g...

External Fields and Color Confinement

U(1), SU(2), and SU(3) lattice gauge theories in presence of external fields are investigated both in (3+1) and (2+1) dimensions. The free energy of gauge systems has been measured. While the phase transition in compact U(1) is not influenced by the strength of an external constant magnetic field, the deconfinement temperature for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge systems in a constant abelian chromomagnet...

An Essay on Color Confinement

Color confinement is a consequence of an unbroken non-Abelian gauge symmetry and the resulting asymptotic freedom inherent in quantum chromodynamics. A qualitative sketch of its proof is presented.

Color Confinement and Massive Gluons

It is shown that there are two phases in QCD distinguished by different choices of the gauge parameter. In one phase, called the ”confined phase”, color confinement is realized and gluons turn out to be massive. In the other phase, called the ”deconfined phase”, color confinement is not realized, but the gluons remain massless.
